Kelpie Collective

There's more to the iconic Australian Kelpie than you think. Here you'll find a central reference to everything we come across that also celebrates, educates and brings together Kelpies and the Kelpie community. We're continually adding to this page so if you have a recommendation or listing let us know via shop@kelpieco.com.

The history of the Kelpie

Rachael Treasure's The Stockmen - a fictional novel about Jack Gleeson and the dog that started it all, Kelpie, first of it's kind intertwined with the start of the Casterton Kelpie Muster. A well written Australian story that I couldn't put down. As recommended by Neil McDonald.

Listen via Audiobook or purchase a copy.

The Casterton Kelpie Muster

Each June long weekend, the Victorian town of Casterton (birthplace of 'Kelpie' Jack Gleeson's dog) holds the Casterton Kelpie Muster and the Australia’s Premier Working Dog Auction.

The event celebrates the Australian Kelpie and runs a market, street parade, novelty events, yard dog trial and stockman's challenge.

Working Kelpie Council of Australia

The Working Kelpie Council of Australia is the central registration organisation for the Kelpie breed. It's aim is to verify and maintain the National Stud Register for the Kelpie, preserve the natural ability of the Kelpie to work stock, and to encourage the breeding registration and use of Council registered working strain Kelpies.

You can also search bloodlines and explore the history of the Kelpie through their website. Visit Working Kelpie Council site.

Nutrition for Working Kelpies

Personal recommendation - listen to the DogTorque episode with Wylder Working Dogs about how to keep your dogs healthy, strong and thriving through nutrition. Lydia is also available for consultation to help you plan out nutrition for your dogs.

Home of the Kelpie

While Casterton was the birthplace of Jack Gleeson's Kelpie, Ardelthan in NSW is the home of the Kelpie. It is said that when Gleeson travelled north with his dog named Kelpie he met up with a friend who gave him a dog from Scotland called Moss that mated with Kelpie to produce the first official litter of Kelpie pups.

Kelpie $1 Coin

In 2022 the Australian Mint released the third series of commemorative alphabet coins with the K being dedicated to the Australian Kelpie. Here's some more information on the release.
